Alanda on Sindo

Reading time: 4 – 6 minutes

My profile is in today’s Seputar Indonesia (Sindo) newspaper. You can read it via the net (if you can’t find the printed version) here.

Kepepet Membawa Nikmat

Soal jadi penulis, misalnya.

Setelah berembuk sana-sini, akhirnya pada 28 Juni 2006, lahirlah The Cure For Tomorrow (TCFT).

Aku mau ketika orang ngeliat aku, ada yang bilang, That’s Alanda, she’s my friend. Wah!…

I don’t know why did the writer put such title. But it’s still one of my biggest achievement in 2007. I mean, WOW! My profile is on a nationwide newspaper (again)! Woo hoo!

I Am Legend

Reading time: 3 – 5 minutes

I think this is another ordinary movie from Hollywood. The plot was about a man named Robert Neville (Will Smith), the last man on earth who survived from Kripper Virus (once was the most famous medicine, which was able to cure cancer) which caused a massive wipe-out on earth. Neville was one of 12 million people who were immune to the airborne and contact strain of the virus. Unfortunately, other immune people had been eaten by the 588 million people who were infected by the virus and became zombies/vampires/mutants. Neville was the only human in New York, living with his beloved dog, Samantha. Neville was also a colonel in the US army, and a scientist in virology (good thing for him!). Where was his family? His wife – Zoe (Salli Richardson) – and their daughter – Marley (Willow Smith, another real-life child of Will Smith besides Jaden!), passed away on a helicopter accident when they were about to be evacuated from New York 3 year earlier (when the virus was spreading). Neville practically living alone, searching for food and stuffs by crashing into other flats and houses, visiting DVD store and talking to mannequins by daylight, and hide himself in his house by sundown. He had never wanted to move from New York because it was the ground zero, his site, and he really wanted to find the cure of the virus (which he did found, in the end. Well, you must have found it out from the title. If he didn’t find the virus, the title won’t be I Am Legend, right? :D).
KOMPAS wrote that it is the stage for Will Smith to do his monologue. I agree, because in most of the movie, Will Smith only spoke to himself, to mannequins and to his dog. Francis Lawrence was really a director who’s not aware of details and tiny (important) things. You will find many bloopers in the movie!
  1. The red Mustang he rode at the beginning was the only vehicle which was very clean! Where did he put it? Because the other cars (including his other vehicles) were very dirty and dusty.
  2. One night, Neville slept in his bath-tub, hugging Samantha and felt afraid of the zombies’ voices out there. He woke up on his bed, without Samantha in his arms.
  3. Where did Anna come from? She didn’t explain it, while the bridge to the city had broken 3 years earlier.
  4. Why were Neville, Anna and Ethan immune to the virus? As a famous scientist (and the only hero in the movie), he didn’t explain it.

And sorry, I think the ending sucks. I didn’t expect to see such conversations about God in a sci-fi movie. The ending was rather spiritual than realist. Well I expect an ending with a lot more action and heroic scenes, not just “Daddy, look at the butterfly” thing.

The good thing was the visualization and how they made that kind of Manhattan. Will Smith is the best thing of the movie. If it wasn’t him, I don’t think the movie will got US$ 76.5 million on the opening night. Will Smith played really great, he could make me cry on the flashbacks and on the scenes with his dog, he could make me feel the same loneliness as Robert Neville did. KOMPAS was right, it is his stage. Hail to Smith! He’s still one of my favourite actors!

JiFFest Movie Review #5: Chants of Lotus

Reading time: 5 – 8 minutes

I watched 2 films yesterday: Chants of Lotus and I Am Legend. I’ll write a review about the first one because Haqi asked me to, sincerely. So yeah. For the second one, and an Indonesian movie which I had just watched (KALA), I’ll write them later.. Stay cool, it’s holiday

It was an incredible opportunity for me to watch this movie much sooner than you guys will do (except for the ones who had watched it in JiFFest 2007, LoL). Well, well. It is an anthology, a four-pieced movie which contains Cerita Pulau, Cerita Jogjakarta, Cerita Cibinong and Cerita Jakarta. They were all about women’s life, the harsh ones, and how did they encounter it.
Cerita Pulau
A midwife, Sumantri (Rieke Dyah Pitaloka), lived in Pulau Kelapa. She suffered from cancer, but she really wanted to sacrifice her life to save Wulan (Rachel Maryam), a girl who suffered from down-syndrome.
Cerita Jogjakarta
Jay Anwar (Fauzi Baadila) who was a Jakarta’s citizen, went to Jogjakarta and met the youngsters in there. Safina (Kirana Larasati), fell for him and showed him around, especially about the sexual life of Jogjakarta’s teenagers which was beyond normal.
Cerita Cibinong
Esi (Shanty) had just found out that his boyfriend, Narto, conducted sexual harassment to her only daughter, Maesaroh (Ken Nala Amrytha). Cicih (Sarah Sechan), her bestfriend who was a popular singer from Merem Melek Club, helped Maesaroh and her. But, both of them were trapped into a case of human-trafficking.

Cerita Jakarta
Laksmi (Susan Bachtiar) had just lost his husband, Reno (Winky Wiryawan). Reno suffered from HIV/AIDS because he was a drug-user. He also left unpaid debt and caused Laksmi to suffer from the same illness too. Just after his husband passed away, Laksmi had to face many difficult things, including to protect her only daughter Belinda (Ranti Maria) who was going to be taken by Reno’s parents.

Please don’t try to find out which piece, which director’s, because it is the best part when you watch the anthology. I tried to guess after watching the anthology and I was right. You know, when you watch movies a lot, you’ll know the directors’ specialties and so on

From an artistic point of view, the general theme was dark. It gave no surprise when I saw the gloomy look of the scenes, and the surreal tone (unlike Arisan!, Janji Joni, Berbagi Suami or Quickie Express which were very colourful and warm). The general plot was about sexual harassment and abuse, you’ll find about it in every movie. In Cerita Pulau, Wulan was raped by three boys brutally and you will hear the brutal dialogs too. In Cerita Jogjakarta, it was all about sex life of teenagers. If you watch carefully, you will find out whose movie it was, because she showed the same storytelling characteristic in her previous movies. Cerita Cibinong also brought up about sexual harassment along with women and children trafficking. It’s very surprising how you witness the innocent Maesaroh being harassed. Cerita Jakarta didn’t bring it up a lot, but you’ll find a thing or two about it at the beginning.

Don’t ask about the actors/actresses, of course you know their quality, right? Shanty proved herself in KALA and The Photograph. Sarah Sechan was also nice and Susan Bachtiar made me cry when I watched the movie. And you must have known Rachel Maryam’s performance from her previous movies (and I think Chants of Lotus is her best performance so far! Go Rachel!), Rieke Dyah Pitaloka was also great (too bad the make up artists put her some mascara on when she was being shot close up on a boat. I don’t think a simple midwife like her would put on some when she was only thinking about a girl who suffered from down-syndrome and her cancer which was already on 3rd stadium!). Don’t expect much from Winky because actually he was only a cameo. I prefer Fauzi Baadila’s acting on Mengejar Matahari to this one. A few thumbs up from the newcomer Kirana Larasati…

As a production of Kalyana Shira Films, I don’t think it is the best one because I still fave Janji Joni and Arisan! It’s possibly caused by the gloomy theme of the movie, which I don’t really like. I prefer the cheerful ones But still, of course it’s good, despite of the movie poster which I think was not catchy at all (oops!). I think the producers should add and socialize that this movie is not suitable for underage children/teenagers. The storytelling was too vulgar, way more than 3 Hari Untuk Selamanya or even Quickie Express! So don’t watch if you’re 15 or below, LoL. Or if you want to watch it, don’t watch with your mom, or your dad.. Hahaha.

PS: Chants of Lotus was the Closing Film for Jakarta International Film Festival 2007.
