With 40.2 million Indonesians between 15 and 24 – or 17% of the country’s population – youth are a large constituency… and Alanda Kariza, author, Indonesia’s 2006 CosmoGIRL! of The Year, and prolific community activist, is launching the country’s first ever youth conference. The Indonesian Youth Conference 2010, which will take place in July 2010, will bring together youth from all 33 provinces in Jakarta to discuss concerns, exchange ideas, and come up with solutions for the betterment of Indonesia.
The idea was born when Alanda, who studies International Business at Binus International University in Jakarta, participated in the 2009 Global Changemakers Youth Summit, where she listened to her peers from other countries talk about youth engagement in their home countries and realised that there were no opportunities for young people in Indonesia to really be heard.
Later that year, the project was given a big push when she, in her function as Global Changemaker, met with the President of Indonesia at the G20 London Summit. “Being able to meet the President of Indonesia and his colleagues at the London Summit allowed me to ask for their support in running the Indonesian Youth Conference, and that made a big difference.”
An experienced organiser and campaigner who has done volunteer work since she was 15, Alanda quickly built a team of people to help her run the conference. She currently has volunteers working on IT, finance, logistics, media—the website has been visited by 106,264 people to date, and has been featured in more than 15 magazines and newspapers and on the radio–, design, PR, sponsorship and more.
Thousands of young people around Indonesia are now busy using the conference’s media tools (its website, Facebook, Twitter and others) to make their voices heard and make sure the issues they are concerned about (some 50 essays with suggestions are published on the website every month) are on the July agenda. “Since I was selected for Global Changemakers, a lot of people have come to respect what I do and are willing to support me because they now believe that I am one of those people who can actually make change,” says Alanda.

You should be our friend. Join the forum. If you are active (and can prove that you write well), they will ask for your help eventually. And it’s not a “job”, it’s a voluntary thing. Hope that helps.
